BlackBerry Z10 review




MOBILE PHO

The BlackBerry Z10 is a full-screen BlackBerry with a terrific display, new operating system, fast processor, 4G capability and some additional business security features.
For a while now it's felt as the BlackBerry brand has been living on borrowed time, its innovations slowly but steadily eroded by the juggernauts of Apple, Google and even Microsoft. But now comes a potential saviour, on sale now for £480.
Design
The Z10 is a solid slab of tech measuring a hefty 130x66mm but manages to keep the thickness aspect down to just 9mm, which is a mite portly by iPhone 5 standards, but still slim enough for most. There's a power button and headphone jack on top and as with BlackBerrys of yore, the volume buttons flank an additional key, but it's no longer programmable -- it mutes the sound or if you hold it down you'll access voice control functions. On the opposite side are a microSD power/sync port and a mini HDMI out for sending your videos and pics to an HDTV.
In common with the Samsung Galaxy S3 and others the removable back is distressingly thin and flimsy. Fortunately it clips securely into place and doesn't suffer from any obvious flex. Underneath are an oddly long and thin battery, plus slots for micro SIM and microSD memory cards.
Screen quality
The 4.2-inch touchscreen has an HD resolution of 1,280x768 pixels and a pixel density of 356ppi. That puts it ahead of the iPhone 5's Retina display sharpness-wise, and on a par with Nokia's Lumia 920. It looks beautiful and was a cinch to use. Beneath the screen is a large BlackBerry logo across an outsized bezel.
There's a point to this besides vanity however, since the bezel is active -- you use it to move around the various screens by swiping up through the screen. Swiping from within an app will show you compressed views of all the apps you're currently running, and from there you can either choose to go into one or swipe to the left to reveal your shortcuts. Swiping up and to the right gets you inot the BlackBerry Hub, which pulls together all your emails, texts and social networking updates.

The BlackBerry 10 operating system marks a break from past versions, and sees BlackBerry moving a step or two closer to what we've come to expect from iOS, with a little bit of Android. So you get multiple home pages that you can populate with shortcut icons, but there are no active widgets to hit you with regularly updated info as soon as you switch on the phone. Then again, you won't get the battery drain that constant updates tend to demand.
One asset for business types who sign up to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is the BlackBerry Balance feature. So you can swipe up to flip between your personal phone settings and your company's corporate account, with whatever content your IT department has established. You can't copy between the two, so security concerns are covered, which ticks the BYOD boxes for the suits and will certainly make some IT managers very happy.
It's clear that BlackBerry still sees business as its core, but that's really the only area where it has any kind of an edge. For virtually all other smartphone aspects, it's long since ceased to be a leader. Still, the Z10's certainly a good enough phone that you wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen with one.
Virtual keyboard
BlackBerry is still strong on messaging, and the new text prediction is unique. The keyboard will consistently throw up suggestions for possible words, but unusually, these will be dotted around the keyboard, based on the position of the next letter for each prediction. If you want to use one, you flick it up onto the sentence you're typing. The flick technique takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you're there it's pretty easy to use.
It's a bit disconcerting that the onscreen keyboard only shows capital letters though -- they'll appear as lower case unless you say otherwise, but when you're used to Android or iOS offering a choice, it seems a bit weird.
PerformanceThere are no quad-core processing pyrotechnics, but the dual-core 1.5GHz engine is backed by a full 2GB RAM, which puts it a step in front of most dual-core handsets and there were no obvious signs of lag, even when we were running a dozen or so apps at once.
Speaking of apps, of course BlackBerry World doesn't have anything like the sheer number available to iOS or Android users, and nor is it ever likely to. But the important thing is that it has lots of the major ones and comes with about 35 preinstalled, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Box and YouTube.
Other features include the BlackBerry Link syncing software, which is fairly straightforward, automatically sussing out your music, pics and vids on your computer and lining them up for syncing. NFC's on board too and you can use it for both payments or for changing your settings using smart tags. BlackBerry Maps is favoured over Google and while it's not as detailed or as well featured as the world leader (which can be a problem, as Apple found to its costrecently when it humiliatingly backtracked on its attempt to oust it from the iOS platform) it'll get you there in most cases.
Cameras and battery
The 8-megapixel camera comes with autofocus and an LED flash but not much in the way of tweaking features. There's no smile or face detection, and no touch focus either, but it does have TimeShift, which lets you take five quickfire shots both before and after you press the shutter -- very handy for capturing elusive moments. It also has a large F2.2 lens to let in more light and picture quality is generally pretty good, although it can be a little light on detail compared to the best. It will record full HD 1080p video too, and there's a 2-megapixel camera on the front for video calls. There's 16GB of memory on board though unlike most Windows phones or indeed the iPhone, you can add up to 64GB more via microSD card.
The 1,800mAh battery did a decent job of keeping the phone active throughout a full day of fairly heavy use -- it's certainly not exceptional, but like most elements of the Z10, it's enough to keep the wheels on the bus without trying to reinvent them.
Conclusion
BlackBerry had a lot of work to do just to keep itself in the premium smartphone game, let alone anywhere near the front of the pack, and it's safe to say that it hasn't cocked it up (it was probably a good idea to end any ongoing confusion by ditching the old company name too). The Z10 may not be exceptional when compared to its rivals and the premium price doesn't really help it either, in these days where top-end prices are rolling downwards. But from its HD screen to its nippy processor, business security features and decent 8-megapixel camera, it does a sound job. It will be interesting to see theQwerty keyboard-toting Q10 in a few weeks' time.

Samsung posted the official video of its hour long keynote presentation yesterday at CES, where it announced the Exynos 5 Octa mobile procesor with eight CPU cores, and flaunted frugal LCD display tech, as well as we got to see for the first time actual prototype devices with its YOUM flexible display technology

The bendy screens are made with a plastic, instead of glass, substrate, which makes them durable, and allows Samsung to fold them in half, taper them to the sides of your phone, or roll them up in a tube.

They also showed a flexible screen prototype, running Windows Phone 8, so that we don't think these are only for Android devices, and there were many more surprises, including the former President Bill Clinton taking up the stage to talk tech and charity cooperation between his Clinton Foundation and Samsung's giving initiatives. Looking into our crystal ball, we'd say the future of computing is looking bendy. Billed as the world's first "paper tablet PC," PaperTab looks to combine the tangibility of paper with the speed and convenience of digital.
PaperTab is the brainchild of Queen's University's Human Media Lab, Plastic Logic and Intel Labs. It's a flexible "high-resolution 10.7-inch" touchscreen display (no details on resolution) and is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor (not shown in any photos).
As we already alluded to earlier, the PaperTab is a new spin on working with multiple documents.
The key difference between the PaperTab and an iPad is that each display is essentially one app. By limiting a single app to each PaperTab, users can do things like share PDFs just by tapping two tablets together, fast-forward during a video by bending the display, and opening emails by touching two displays together.
Multiple PaperTabs can also be combined to create expanded displays and drag-and-drop functionality between tablets.
PaperTabs are also proximity-smart.each PaperTab knows its location relative to other PaperTabs. If a PaperTab is held, it will display a fullscreen app window. If it's placed on a table, but still within reach of the user, it'll show a thumbnail of a document. And if the PaperTab is placed outside of reaching distance, it'll only display icons.
The "tablet" isn't quite wireless yet, as it looks to require power from a computer that is presumably under the desk. However, as we move towards a future of "natural computing," the PaperTab could be a concept technology that'll finally the old timers to finally join the digital revolution.

Samsung's Galaxy S Advance uses the same shell as the original Galaxy S, which, to be fair has aged rather well all things considered.
It follows the usual ‘candy bar' format common of most modern smartphones and is still one of the thinner and lighter handsets available. It might not be visually groundbreaking but it's almost difficult to believe the design is well over a year old.
The Galaxy S2 is physically larger and a bit more imposing than the Galaxy S Advance, it's also the slimmer and lighter of the two handsets.
This is in part due to the use of lightweight plastics but don't be fooled into thinking the Galaxy S2 is flimsy, the plastic surfaces might feel a bit cheap but Samsung uses some fairly sturdy materials and a build quality which ensures the device isn't going to break anytime soon.
Visually it's a bit more interesting than the Galaxy S Advance, the corners are sharper and the elongated proportions create a much nicer shape, in our view. We have heard of some people finding the larger size a little cumbersome, however, so if you prefer smaller handsets it probably shouldn't be your first choice.

Both phones use Samsung's Super AMOLED technology, but the Galaxy S2 is a little higher up the chain on display quality as it has Super AMOLED Plus technology. The Galaxy S Advance uses a 4-inch multi-touch capacitive screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels, giving a pixel density of 233 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
Being the larger of the two handsets the Galaxy S2's screen is also bigger at 4.3-inches but packs the same resolution and a slightly lower pixel density of 217ppi. The Super AMOLED Plus display more than makes up for this, however.
Both devices also use Corning's reinforced Gorilla Glass.
Each handset has an excellent display which should please even the most demanding pixel-counter but we think the Galaxy S2 just has the edge in this contest.

Storage
The Galaxy S Advance has two available options for internal storage, either 8GB or 16GB, while RAM has been upgraded from the original Galaxy S's 512MB to 768MB to help things run a bit smoother. There's also 2GB of ROM onboard.
That 16GB upper-tier option for the Galaxy S Advance is the Galaxy S2's minimum internal capacity and there's a 32GB model for even more onboard space. It also carries much more RAM than its opponent with a whole 1GB to play with.
Both handsets support microSD cards to expand phone storage by up to 32GB.
Of course the Galaxy S2 wins here by offering much more storage space and oodles of RAM.

The budget iPhone: rumormongers have obsessed out the possibility for years. Though Apple hasn't – and likely never will – manufacture a new iPhone just to tackle the economy market, the company has covered that segment nonetheless. The recipe is simple: continue selling previous years' iPhones in decreasing increments of $100.
Rather than complicating its product lineup with an "iPhone Lite," Apple is now selling last year's iPhone 4S for $100 and 2010's iPhone 4 for free (with new two-year contracts, of course). This gives Apple an "in" with economy-minded shoppers and emerging markets – without betraying its premium allure.
So, on store shelves this year, the iPhone 5 is joined by its previous two ancestors. There's no question which phone is the best .but is it worth saving a few bucks on one of the older models?
Specs aren't everything, but they can suggest a device's raw capabilities. With healthy grains of salt in hand, let's see how the last three iPhones compare:

Apple iPad mini vs Google Nexus 7



Apple iPad mini vs Google Nexus 7 (budget tablet showdown)

Ever since the first rumors regarding Google’s Nexus 7 tablet emerged online, a multitude of experts began to claim that Apple (the company that jumpstarted the tablet market with the introduction of the original iPad back in 2010) would bring to market a budget tablet of its own  – although the first iPad mini rumors started way back in 2011. Fast forward a few months and both rumors have finally materialized into hardware devices.
Before we start analyzing which one of these devices is the better budget tablet, it might be best to first explain why the battle between the Apple iPad mini and the Google Nexus 7 is of ultimate importance for the future of both Android as well as iOS. As representational tablets for their respective ecosystems (as in Android vs iOS), these two budget tablets will undoubtedly play an important part in the market share battle between Android (and all the Android OEMs out there) and Apple and its proprietary operating system.
So, which one is better: the Google Nexus 7 or the Apple iPad mini ? Lets find out, shall we?

Display

The ASUS / Google Nexus 7 uses a 7-inch display running at a 1280 by 800 resolution (16:10 aspect ratio), thus obtaining a Pixel Per Inch (PPI) density of 216. While it is not the best display currently available on a tablet, the Nexus 7 display is impressively crisp, bright, offers good color reproduction and decent viewing angles. Given that the most expensive component of a tablet is its display (not to mention that the display is also the main feature of a tablet), you’re probably going to be impressed by the quality of the display on the Google Nexus 7 (a budget tablet by definition).
In the other corner, the freshly announced Apple iPad mini features a 7.9-inch IPS display running at a 1024 by 768 pixel resolution (4:3 aspect ratio), thus obtaining a PPI density of just 162. The iPad mini uses the same resolution as the second generation Apple iPad, but has a smaller display, hence the minor improvement in crispness over Apple’s second tablet (the iPad 2 has a 132 PPI ratio).
Although the difference in inches across the diagonal might not seem all that significant, if we’re to add in the difference in aspect ratios, the Apple iPad mini actually has roughly 35% more screen real estate than the Google Nexus 7. On the other hand, if you want enhanced crispness, the Google Nexus 7 is the way to go.

Design and Build Quality

When it comes to build quality and design, the Google Nexus 7 is one sleek and sexy piece of hardware. You literally cannot believe that it is a budget tablet (priced at just $199 in its 8GB variant) in any way: a glossy black bezel surrounds the display in such a way that you have something to hold the tablet by when viewing videos or reading an ebook, while the soft rubbery material on the back mimics the sort of tactile feedback you get from a race car steering wheel.
On to exact dimensions, the Google Nexus 7 measures 198.5 x 120 x 10.5 mm (7.81 x 4.72 x 0.41 in) and weighs in at 340 g (11.99 oz). It’s not the lightest or the thinnest Android tablet out there, but the end overall product feels like nothing else in its price range.
When it comes to design lines and principles, the Apple iPad mini is, in many ways, the little brother that the iPad 3 never had. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as Apple’s uni-body aluminum design has received lots of praise from both consumers and critics, but it sure feels like Apple tends to stick too much to what has worked well in the past. I’m probably being way too subjective here, but the Apple iPad mini looks a lot like Foxconn trimmed down on the iPad 2 with a scissor: it’s all the same, but smaller. The Apple iPad mini is just 7.2 mm thick and weighs in at just under 0.7 pounds, or 317.5 grams.

Hardware

Now that we’ve analyzed the outside of both these tablets, it is now time to discuss the internal hardware, so let’s dive in!
As plenty of rumors have claimed so during the past couple of months, the Apple iPad mini uses the Apple A5 System On a Chip (SoC). Even non-tech savvy readers are probably aware that this is the same CPU / GPU combination that was used by the Apple iPad 2 and the Apple iPhone 4S. This translates into a 1 GHz dual-core Cortex A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.
In the Android corner, the Google Nexus 7 uses a slightly underclocked version of the Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC: a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex A9 CPU, and an Nvidia ULP (Ultra Low Power) GPU.
The Google Nexus 7 uses 1GB of RAM memory, while the Apple iPad mini is said to have 512MB of RAM under the hood (Apple usually doesn’t mention RAM for its iOS devices during launch events).
While the Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU is generally faster than the A5 CPU, graphical performance should be a tad better on the Apple iPad mini since its GPU (although similarly powerful as the Nvidia GPU inside the Google Nexus 7) has to power up less pixels (33% less pixels to be accurate). I’m one of those guys that prefers extra detail over a few extra frames per second, so I obviously stand by the Google Nexus 7 in this aspect.
As far as built-in storage is concerned, the Google Nexus 7 comes in 8GB and 16GB variants, while the Apple iPad mini comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants. Neither of these two tablets feature a microSD card reader, meaning you can only turn to cloud storage for expanding the internal storage.
On to the cameras and ports, the Google Nexus 7 uses a 1.2 MP front-facing camera for videocalling, the same resolution used by the sensor on the Apple iPad mini’s front facing camera. Since it is not recommended to use a tablet for taking pictures, I’m not all that into the 5MP primary camera used by the Apple iPad mini, so I’d advise against giving too much attention to this aspect.
Since NFC is still a young technology, you’re probably not going to miss the fact that the iPad mini does not use an NFC chip. If NFC is a thing that you need, go for the Nexus 7, since it doescarry an NFC chip.
Battery-wise, the Google Nexus 7 has a 4325 mAh battery, while the Apple iPad mini uses a battery of currently undisclosed capacity. However, we should expect the two tablets to have similar battery life spans: roughly around 10 hours.

Operating System and Ecosystem


Although there are significant hardware differences between the Apple iPad mini and the Google Nexus 7 (and you should already be aware of them by now), a decision ultimately boils down to choosing the OS and ecosystem that is right for you.
The Google Nexus 7 was the first device to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, an update that is notorious for its Project Butter, as well as the introduction of Google Now. Android is an open, fully customizable mobile OS that allows you to install apps from any source you want to, or even modify the OS itself by installing custom mods. Android is for people that generally know what they are doing and need the ability to do complex tasks without any restrictions from the manufacturer.
In the other corner, the Apple iPad mini uses iOS 6, the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, a version that was released for the first time on the Apple iPhone 5. Social media integration is somewhat better than what you get from Jelly Bean, Siri has a lot of personality, while the OS itself is designed around simplicity.
However, with the iPad mini, you can officially download and install apps only from Apple’s App Store, you cannot modify the OS, nor can you customize your device’s OS beyond a point (that’s really not that far off from where you start out of the box). In addition, if the map app is what you’re looking for, stay away from iOS 6 devices and get an Android device (Google Maps is light years ahead of Apple’s Maps app, and chances are that it will stay that way for a long tine from now on).
One popular discussion that has often surfaced when discussing Android tablets vs iPads in the past was the fact that iPad apps are generally better optimized than Android tablet apps. However, since the Nexus 7 came out, Google made major strides in enticing app developers to provide tablet-optimised versions of their apps.
At this point in time, I’m sure that each and every Android app developer with an intention to write apps that work on Android tablets are optimizing their code for the Nexus 7. Sure, there are plenty of Android apps that basically just stretch everything up so that the content takes up the entire real estate without properly arranging and designing it, but the number of non-tablet optimized apps in the Android ecosystem is becoming less significant each day.

Conclusions

While all of us can surely understand the fact that Apple’s iPad mini does not top off the Google Nexus 7 tablet in any conceivable way, some cannot begin to understand why did the Cupertino based manufacturer priced the 16GB version at $329, when the 16GB Google Nexus 7 offers better specs at $249, not to mention that an 8GB version of the Nexus 7 is also available for just $199.
The answer lies in the fact that Google did not aim to make money with the Nexus 7. Instead, the search engine giant copied the business model first introduced to the tablet market by the Amazon Kindle Fire: get the product in consumer hands at no profit so that you can increase your customer base, then make money by selling content (and ads). On the other hand, Apple’s business model wants you to pay extra moolah just so you can buy a device with an Apple logo. While this seems to work very well with high-end devices (such as the iPhone or the non-mini iPads), it remains to be seen how many people are willing to pay premiums on budget devices.

Updates Of Devices



Incremental device updates: Are they good or bad?

We live in a world in which technology is moving very rapidly. While this can be great in terms of innovation, it can be extremely annoying for consumers. We also live in a world where most smartphone users are locked into multi-year contracts. Why is it that the contracts we are forced to abide by don’t line up with the rate in which new technology is being released?
There has been a new trend forming lately that causes smartphone manufacturers to release incremental updates to their most popular phones. Samsung, for instance started with their popular Galaxy S3 device, and then released the Galaxy S3 Alpha with only one new notable feature. Additionally, HTC released the One X, and then followed it by releasing the One X+. On top of all that, Motorola has even introduced several different incarnations of it’s popular Droid Razr device.
While it’s understandable that companies are constantly making adjustments and adding new features to their arsenal, why are these features being released so soon? Any time a company releases a specific feature, other companies feel as though they have to compensate. As a result, we get new brandings of familiar phones just to fill in a minor feature gap. The worst part is that some of these updates come just months after the initial product launch.
Not only is this unfair to consumers who have just purchased the original device, but it also causes confusion within the ecosystem as to which phone is which. If manufacturers choose to do incremental updates like this, then the carriers need to change the ways by which they do things. They need to stop locking customers into lengthy contracts so they don’t have to wait as long to get the latest technology. Additionally, it won’t be a bad idea to make devices a little cheaper to allow a customer to purchase an incrementally-updated phone if they so choose.
For some reason, manufacturers tend to re-brand a device when they introduce it in a new territory. This only adds to the confusion, as we see a flush of devices that look and function exactly the same, but have different names. But what’s odd is that sometimes the same phone will be referred to by a different name depending on which carrier it is on, even if they are in the same territory.
Why can’t manufacturers release a device with one name, across all territories? If the problem is in the difference in cellular technology, then that surely isn’t enough of a difference to justify a new name. Manufacturers should be working hard to create a unified experience no matter which country you’re in or what carrier you’re on.
